A grown-up twist on a childhood Halloween memory, this spooky cocktail combines tart blood orange juice, smooth vodka, and blackberry liqueur for a deep crimson color and incredible flavor. Quick to make and perfect for Halloween parties, it’s a deliciously eerie drink that will impress your guests.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 oz vodka (preferably Tito’s)
  • 1 oz blackberry liqueur (Crème de Mûre or Chambord)
  • 3 oz fresh blood orange juice (about 1 large blood orange)
  • 1/2 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 oz simple syrup (optional, adjust to taste)
  • 1 small piece food-grade dry ice (optional, for smoky effect)
  • OR 1 sprig fresh rosemary (for non-smoky garnish)
  • 1 blood orange slice (for garnish)
  • 23 fresh blackberries (for garnish)
  • 1 plastic vampire fang (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your glass: Rim the glass with simple syrup and dip in black or red sanding sugar. Let dry.
  2. Juice the blood oranges: Roll oranges on counter, cut in half, and juice to get 3 oz per drink. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve if desired.
  3. Build the cocktail: Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add vodka, blackberry liqueur, blood orange juice, lime juice, and simple syrup (if using). Shake vigorously for about 15 seconds until shaker feels frosty.
  4. Strain and serve: Fill prepared glass with fresh ice (or leave empty). Strain cocktail into glass.
  5. Add garnish: Float a blood orange slice on top or perch on rim. Drop in blackberries. If using dry ice, use tongs to add a pea-sized piece. If using rosemary, tap sprig to release oils and place in glass.
  6. Final touch: Place a plastic vampire fang on the rim or float in drink. Serve immediately.

Notes

Don’t over-shake (max 20 seconds) to avoid dilution. Use chilled vodka and cold juice for best results. For dry ice safety: never handle with bare hands, use a pea-sized piece, and don’t seal the glass. The cocktail base can be mixed ahead and stored in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
