Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 3/4 cups (345g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup (113g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) eggnog
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup (50g) granulated sugar (for coating)
  • 1 tablespoon ground nutmeg (for coating)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, salt, and 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg.
  3. In a large bowl, beat softened butter and 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add egg, eggnog, and vanilla extract; beat on low until just combined.
  5. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing on low until just combined. Finish folding by hand.
  6. In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup sugar and 1 tablespoon nutmeg for coating.
  7. Scoop rounded tablespoons of dough, roll into balls, then roll in sugar-nutmeg mixture until coated.
  8. Place dough balls 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets.
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until edges are set and tops are cracked and lightly golden.
  10. Let cookies cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Notes

For thicker cookies, chill dough for 15-20 minutes before baking. Use full-fat eggnog for best texture. Do not skip cream of tartar; it gives the signature tang. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. Freeze baked cookies for up to 3 months.
