These quick apple dumplings use crescent roll dough and a simple cinnamon sugar sauce for a delicious dessert that comes together in just 30 minutes. Perfect for weeknights or when you need a fast, comforting treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup (110g) packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) water
  • 1/4 cup (60g) unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Peel and core the apples, then cut each into 8 wedges (16 total).
  2. Unroll the crescent roll dough and separate into 8 triangles. Flatten each slightly with your fingers.
  3. Place one apple wedge at the wide end of a crescent roll triangle. Roll it up, tucking in the sides, so the apple is completely enclosed. Place seam-side down in an 8×8 inch baking dish. Repeat with 8 wedges. Set aside the remaining 8 apple wedges.
  4. In a small bowl, mix 1 tablespoon sugar and 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon. Brush the tops of the wrapped dumplings with melted butter, then sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly over them.
  5. In a small saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, brown sugar, water, butter, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and salt. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and simmer for 2-3 minutes until sugar is dissolved and sauce thickens slightly. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract.
  6. Pour the hot sauce over the wrapped dumplings. Tuck the remaining 8 apple wedges in the spaces between the dumplings. Bake for 20-25 minutes, until dough is golden brown and sauce is bubbly.
  7. Let the dumplings cool in the dish for 5 minutes before serving. Spoon sauce over each dumpling when serving.

Notes

Don’t skip the nutmeg—it adds warmth. Let the dumplings rest for 5 minutes after baking so the sauce soaks in. For a dairy-free version, use vegan butter. For gluten-free, use gluten-free crescent roll dough. The flavors improve after a day in the fridge.
