A lighter, homemade version of the Starbucks Apple Crisp Macchiato that’s ready in under 5 minutes. Made with real apple cider reduction, maple syrup, and warm spices, this cozy fall drink delivers all the flavor without the sugar crash.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup apple cider (unfiltered, if possible)
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup (pure maple syrup)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of ground cloves (optional)
  • 1 cup milk of choice (oat milk, almond milk, or 2% milk)
  • 1–2 shots espresso or 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Whipped cream for topping (optional)
  • Extra cinnamon for dusting

Instructions

  1. Make the apple cider syrup: In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine 1/2 cup apple cider, 1 tablespoon maple syrup, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, and a pinch of cloves. Stir and bring to a gentle simmer. Let it bubble for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly and coats the back of a spoon. Remove from heat and stir in 1 teaspoon vanilla extract. Set aside.
  2. Heat and froth your milk: Pour 1 cup of your chosen milk into the same saucepan (or a separate one). Warm over medium heat until steaming but not boiling (about 2 minutes). Froth with a frother or use the mason jar method: pour warm milk into a jar, shake for 30 seconds, then microwave for 30 seconds.
  3. Brew your coffee: While the milk is warming, brew 1-2 shots of espresso or 1/2 cup of strong coffee. Use a dark roast for bold flavor.
  4. Assemble the drink: Pour the apple cider syrup into the bottom of your mug. Slowly pour the frothed milk over the syrup (do not stir). Then gently pour the espresso or coffee over the milk to create layers.
  5. Top and serve: Add a dollop of whipped cream if desired. Dust with extra cinnamon. Serve immediately.

Notes

Don’t boil the apple cider syrup—a gentle simmer is key. For the best flavor, use unfiltered apple cider. The apple cider syrup can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to one week. For an iced version, cool the syrup completely, then assemble with ice, cold milk, and cold brew or chilled espresso.
