These soft, buttery sugar cookies are topped with pretzel legs and a chocolate body, making them the perfect spooky treat for Halloween. They’re easy enough for kids to help make and delicious enough to disappear in minutes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (226g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups (250g) all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 32 mini pretzel sticks (about 1/2 cup)
  • 8 chocolate candy melts or Hershey’s Kisses, unwrapped
  • 1/2 cup chocolate chips or candy eyes (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the bowl once or twice.
  2. Add the room-temperature egg and vanilla extract to the butter mixture. Beat on low speed until just combined.
  3. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing on low speed until the dough just comes together.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a piece of plastic wrap. Flatten it into a disc about 1 inch thick, wrap it tightly, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
  6. Lightly flour your work surface and rolling pin. Roll the dough out to about 1/4-inch thickness. Use a 3-inch round cookie cutter to cut out circles. Re-roll the scraps once and cut more circles. You should get about 8 cookies.
  7. Place the cut dough circles on your prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Break each mini pretzel stick in half. Gently press 8 half-pretzel sticks into the top of each dough circle, arranging them like spider legs—four on each side, radiating outward from the center.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are just barely golden brown. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer them to a cooling rack to cool completely.
  9. Once the cookies are completely cool, melt your chocolate candy melts or chocolate chips in a small microwave-safe bowl in 20-second bursts, stirring between each burst, until smooth. Dab a small amount of melted chocolate onto the center of each cookie and place a chocolate candy melt or Hershey’s Kiss on top, pressing gently.
  10. For the eyes, use the remaining melted chocolate to dab two tiny dots on the front of the spider body, or press candy eyes into a tiny dab of chocolate. Let everything set completely before serving—about 20 minutes at room temperature, or 10 minutes in the fridge.

Notes

Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes to prevent spreading. Press pretzel legs gently but firmly into the dough before baking. Let cookies cool completely before adding chocolate body. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. Freeze undecorated cookies for up to 3 months.
