Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 box (3 oz) strawberry or cherry Jell-O
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1/2 cup vodka
  • 1 box (3 oz) lime Jell-O
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1/2 cup vodka
  • 1/2 cup red and green sprinkles (round ones work best)
  • Whipped cream for serving (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your workspace: Clear off your counter and arrange 20-24 (2-ounce) shot cups on a baking sheet, close together so they don’t tip over.
  2. Make the red layer: In a small bowl, empty the strawberry Jell-O packet. Pour in 1 cup of boiling water and whisk until the powder is completely dissolved (about 2 minutes). Add 1/2 cup cold water and 1/2 cup vodka. Stir gently to avoid bubbles.
  3. Pour the red layer: Carefully pour the red mixture into each shot cup, filling them about one-third full. Refrigerate for 30-40 minutes, or until the red layer is set but still slightly tacky on top.
  4. Make the green layer while you wait: In a separate bowl, repeat the process with the lime Jell-O: 1 cup boiling water, dissolve completely, then add 1/2 cup cold water and 1/2 cup vodka. Set aside at room temperature.
  5. Add the sprinkles: Once the red layer is set, sprinkle about 1 teaspoon of sprinkles over each cup. Don’t press them in.
  6. Pour the green layer: Gently pour the green mixture over the sprinkles and red layer, filling each cup about two-thirds full. Pour slowly to avoid mixing the layers.
  7. Final chill: Place the tray back in the fridge and let the shots set completely for 2-4 hours, or overnight for best texture.
  8. Serve: Just before serving, top each shot with a dollop of whipped cream and a few extra sprinkles. Serve chilled.

Notes

For best results, let the first layer set completely before adding the second. Use name brand Jell-O for firmer texture. If layers mix, the first layer wasn’t set long enough. For non-alcoholic version, replace vodka with equal amount cold water. Can be made up to 5 days ahead; add whipped cream just before serving. Avoid nonpareil sprinkles as they bleed color.
