These Spooky Witch’s Finger Pretzel Rods are salty, sweet, and have that perfect crunch. Made with green candy coating and slivered almond fingernails, they look genuinely creepy but taste irresistible. Ready in about 20 minutes, they are the perfect last-minute Halloween treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package (about 12 ounces) pretzel rods
  • 12 ounces green candy melts or almond bark
  • About 30 slivered almonds
  • 1 tube black decorating gel
  • 1 tube red decorating gel (optional, for blood drip effect)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your work station: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper. If using a cooling rack, place it over the lined baking sheet. Set slivered almonds in a small bowl nearby.
  2. Melt the green candy coating: Place candy melts or almond bark in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring thoroughly after each interval, until smooth (about 90 seconds total). If too thick, stir in 1 teaspoon coconut oil or shortening.
  3. Dip the pretzel rods: Hold one pretzel rod by the end and dip into melted coating, leaving about an inch undipped at the bottom. Let excess drip back into the bowl for a few seconds.
  4. Create the finger texture: Before coating sets, gently press the coated pretzel rod against the parchment or cooling rack to create a flat spot on one side. Use fingertip or toothpick to press indentations at knuckle points (about three per finger).
  5. Add the fingernail: While coating is still wet, press a slivered almond onto the tip of the pretzel rod, pointed end extending slightly beyond the tip. Press gently to secure.
  6. Create the knuckle details: Using black decorating gel, pipe small lines or dots at the knuckle indentations. Use a toothpick to drag gel into finer lines for wrinkles and creases.
  7. Add optional blood drips: If desired, use red decorating gel to add a small drip at the base of the almond fingernail.
  8. Let them set completely: Place finished pretzel rods on parchment-lined baking sheet and let sit at room temperature until coating is completely hard (about 15-20 minutes). Do not refrigerate.
  9. Repeat with remaining pretzel rods: Work in batches of 4-5 at a time so coating does not set before adding details. Reheat coating if it thickens.

Notes

Work in a cool, dry room to prevent coating from seizing. Do not dip all pretzel rods at once; dip, detail, and set each batch individually. The flavor improves after a day or two. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to one week. Freeze for up to two months.
