These Easy Spider Web Chocolate Crinkle Cookies are deeply chocolate, soft in the middle with a perfect crinkle on top, and feature a delicate spider web icing pattern that looks impressive but is surprisingly simple to create. Perfect for Halloween or any time you want a quick, crowd-pleasing treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups (180g) all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup (50g) unsweetened cocoa powder (Dutch-process recommended)
  • 1 cup (200g) granulated sugar
  • ⅓ cup (80ml) vegetable oil (canola or sunflower)
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup (60g) powdered sugar (for coating)
  • For the spider web icing:
  • 1 cup (120g) powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tablespoons milk (whole milk preferred)
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour, ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 2 teaspoons baking powder, and ½ teaspoon salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together 1 cup granulated sugar, ⅓ cup vegetable oil, 2 large eggs, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until smooth and slightly thickened, about 30 seconds.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients. Stir with a spatula until just combined. Do not overmix. The dough will be soft and slightly sticky.
  5. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and chill in the fridge for 15 minutes.
  6. While the dough chills, make the spider web icing: In a small bowl, whisk together 1 cup powdered sugar, 2 tablespoons milk, and ½ teaspoon vanilla extract. Add the third tablespoon of milk if needed to achieve a thick but pipeable consistency (like toothpaste). Set aside.
  7. Scoop rounded tablespoons of dough (about 1.5 tablespoons each) and roll into smooth balls. Roll each ball in the ½ cup powdered sugar until completely coated.
  8. Place the dough balls about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheets (about 6 per sheet).
  9. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until puffed and cracked on top. The edges should be set but centers still slightly soft.
  10. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  11. Once completely cool, spoon the icing into a small piping bag or zip-top bag. Snip off a tiny corner. Pipe a spiral starting from the center of each cookie, working outward.
  12. Immediately after piping, drag a toothpick from the center of the spiral outward through the icing lines in 6-8 evenly spaced directions to create the web pattern. Wipe the toothpick clean between cookies.
  13. Let the icing set at room temperature for about 20 minutes until firm to the touch. Serve or store.

Notes

Don’t skip the chill time—it prevents the cookies from spreading too much. For the icing, start with less milk and add more drop by drop for better consistency. If the icing is too runny, add more powdered sugar a tablespoon at a time. The cookies taste even better the day after baking.
