Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 cups whole milk (or 2%)
  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 ½ cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • Marshmallows (for garnish, optional)
  • Whipped cream (for garnish, optional)
  • Chocolate shavings (for garnish, optional)
  • Black and orange sprinkles (for garnish, optional)
  • Gummy worms (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Lightly spray the slow cooker insert with nonstick cooking spray or rub with butter.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, cinnamon, and salt. Sifting the cocoa powder is recommended to prevent lumps.
  3. Pour the milk, sweetened condensed milk, and heavy cream into the slow cooker. Whisk gently to combine.
  4. Add the chocolate chips and the cocoa mixture. Whisk until the cocoa powder is fully incorporated.
  5. Cover and cook on LOW for 2 to 3 hours. Stir once after 1 hour.
  6. Stir in the vanilla extract right before serving.
  7. Whisk the hot chocolate until smooth before serving.
  8. Ladle into mugs and garnish with desired toppings.

Notes

Cook on LOW only to prevent scorching. The hot chocolate can be kept on WARM for up to 4 hours. If it thickens too much, stir in a splash of milk. For a dairy-free version, use full-fat oat milk and coconut cream. The flavors deepen after a day in the fridge.
