This Easy Crockpot Halloween Hot Chocolate Bar is a simple, forgiving recipe that turns a regular October night into something magical. It’s perfect for Halloween gatherings, keeping everyone warm and happy with a rich, creamy hot chocolate that stays at the perfect sipping temperature for hours.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups (1.4 liters) whole milk
  • 1 cup (240 ml) heavy cream
  • ½ cup (60 grams) unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¾ cup (150 grams) granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup (90 grams) semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • Marshmallows for serving
  • Halloween sprinkles for garnish
  • Candy corn or candy eyeballs for topping
  • Whipped cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. Combine the dry ingredients. In a small bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  2. Warm the milk base. Pour the whole milk and heavy cream into your slow cooker. Turn it on LOW. Let it warm for about 5 minutes.
  3. Add the dry mixture. Slowly sprinkle the cocoa-sugar mixture into the warm milk, whisking constantly until fully dissolved and smooth.
  4. Add the vanilla and chocolate chips. Stir in the vanilla extract and semi-sweet chocolate chips. Whisk again after about 10 minutes to incorporate the melted chocolate.
  5. Cook on LOW for 2 hours. Cover the crockpot and let it cook. Stir every 30 minutes if possible. The hot chocolate should be steaming and fragrant when ready. If it starts to simmer, turn to WARM.
  6. Taste and adjust. After 2 hours, taste and add more sugar or chocolate chips if desired.
  7. Set up the bar. While the hot chocolate finishes, arrange toppings in small bowls: mini marshmallows, Halloween sprinkles, candy corn, candy eyeballs, and whipped cream. Set out cups and a ladle.
  8. Serve and enjoy. Ladle the hot chocolate into cups and let everyone customize their own. The crockpot will keep it warm on the WARM setting for up to 4 hours. Stir every hour or so.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, use full-fat oat milk and coconut cream instead of heavy cream. For a lower-sugar option, substitute monk fruit sweetener or maple syrup. If you don’t have a slow cooker, you can use a large saucepan on the stove over low heat, but you’ll need to stir more often. Leftover hot chocolate keeps in the fridge for up to 3 days and tastes even better the next day.
