These creamy crockpot mashed potatoes are completely hands-off, stay warm for hours, and are perfect for feeding a crowd. Made with Yukon Gold potatoes, butter, cream cheese, and garlic, they are unbelievably creamy and rich.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 5 pounds Yukon Gold potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, cut into cubes
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened and cut into cubes
  • 1 tablespoon garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper, freshly ground
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed
  • Optional: 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (for garlic butter finish)
  • 2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced (for garlic butter finish)
  • Fresh chives or parsley, chopped for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prep the potatoes (15 minutes): Peel all 5 pounds of Yukon Gold potatoes and cut them into 1-inch chunks. Rinse the cut potatoes in cold water to remove excess starch, then drain well. Pat dry with a clean kitchen towel.
  2. Layer in the crockpot (5 minutes): Place the potato chunks in your slow cooker. Scatter the cubed butter and cream cheese over the top. Add the minced garlic, salt, and pepper. Do not stir.
  3. Cook on low (4-5 hours): Cover the crockpot and cook on low for 4 to 5 hours, or until the potatoes are fork-tender.
  4. Warm the milk (2 minutes): About 10 minutes before the potatoes are done, warm the milk in a small saucepan over low heat or in the microwave for about 45 seconds.
  5. Mash the potatoes (5 minutes): Once the potatoes are tender, use a hand mixer on low speed to mash them right in the crockpot. Gradually increase speed as potatoes break down. Pour in the warm milk while mixing, adding it slowly. Mix until smooth and creamy, about 2-3 minutes.
  6. Make the garlic butter finish (5 minutes): In a small saucepan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced garlic and cook for 1-2 minutes until fragrant and just starting to turn golden. Pour over the finished mashed potatoes and stir gently.
  7. Taste and adjust (2 minutes): Taste and add more salt and pepper if needed. Garnish with fresh chopped chives or parsley.
  8. Keep warm until serving: Switch the crockpot to the ‘warm’ setting. The potatoes will stay creamy for up to 2 hours. If they thicken too much, stir in a splash of warm milk.

Notes

Don’t skip the cream cheese—it’s the secret to ultra-creamy texture. Cut potatoes evenly for even cooking. Warm the milk before adding to prevent lumps. Do not overmix to avoid gluey texture. Use the ‘warm’ setting wisely; stir in warm milk if potatoes dry out. Taste before serving to adjust seasoning.
