These cozy red velvet crinkle cookies with powdered sugar are quick, easy, and perfect for lazy Sundays or cold winter evenings. They feature a soft, fudgy center with a beautiful crinkled top, made from simple pantry ingredients.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour (spooned and leveled)
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon buttermilk
  • 1 tablespoon red food coloring (gel preferred)
  • ½ cup powdered sugar (for coating)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour, ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 teaspoon baking powder, and ¼ teaspoon salt.
  3. In a large bowl, beat ½ cup softened butter and ¾ cup granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
  4. Beat in 1 large egg, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 1 tablespoon buttermilk until just combined.
  5. Add 1 tablespoon red food coloring and mix until the batter is evenly red.
  6. Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing on low speed or folding with a spatula until just combined. Do not overmix.
  7. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours.
  8. Scoop out about 1.5 tablespoons of dough per cookie. Roll each portion into a smooth ball.
  9. Place ½ cup powdered sugar in a small bowl. Roll each dough ball in the sugar until completely coated. Shake off excess.
  10. Place the coated dough balls on the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart. Bake for 10-12 minutes. The edges should be set but the centers still soft.
  11. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Chill the dough for at least 30 minutes to achieve the perfect crinkle. For a more dramatic crinkle, roll the dough balls twice in powdered sugar. Use gel food coloring for a deeper red without thinning the batter. Let cookies cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
