peppermint mocha recipe - featured image

This rich, chocolatey, and minty peppermint mocha comes together in just 5 minutes using simple ingredients like cocoa powder, milk, and peppermint extract. It’s a cozy, budget-friendly alternative to the coffee shop version, perfect for cold days and holiday mornings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup whole milk (or oat milk for dairy-free)
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (e.g., Ghirardelli or Hershey’s Special Dark)
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons granulated sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract (pure extract recommended)
  • 1 shot of espresso or 1/2 cup strong brewed coffee (or decaf)
  • 2 tablespoons dark chocolate chips or chopped dark chocolate (60% cacao, optional but recommended)
  • Whipped cream (for topping)
  • Crushed candy cane or peppermint candies (for garnish, optional)

Instructions

  1. Brew your coffee or espresso. Set aside.
  2. In a small saucepan, combine the milk, cocoa powder, and sugar. Whisk over medium heat until the cocoa powder is fully dissolved and the mixture is steaming (about 2-3 minutes). Do not let it boil.
  3. Add the dark chocolate chips (if using) and whisk until melted and smooth (about 30 seconds).
  4. Remove from heat and stir in the peppermint extract. Taste and adjust if desired.
  5. Pour the hot coffee or espresso into a large mug. Pour the peppermint chocolate milk over it and stir gently to combine.
  6. Top generously with whipped cream.
  7. Garnish with crushed candy cane or peppermint candies.
  8. Serve immediately.

Notes

Do not boil the milk to avoid scorching. Whisk constantly to prevent lumps. Measure peppermint extract carefully—start with 1/4 teaspoon and add more to taste. Pre-warm your mug by rinsing with hot water to keep the drink hot longer. For a cold version, let the coffee cool and pour over ice. Leftover peppermint chocolate milk can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days; reheat gently on the stovetop.
