This cozy brown sugar buttered rum is a warm, aromatic hug in a mug—the kind of thing that makes you slow down, breathe deep, and actually feel the cold outside melt away. It’s a quick and easy drink that turns a skeptic into a believer, one slow, warming sip at a time.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon (14g) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 tablespoon (12g) brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/16 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 ounces (1/4 cup or 60ml) dark or spiced rum
  • 6 ounces (3/4 cup or 180ml) boiling water
  • Cinnamon stick (for garnish, optional)
  • Whipped cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make the butter base (2 minutes): In a small mixing bowl, combine 1 tablespoon (14g) of softened unsalted butter with 1 tablespoon (12g) of packed brown sugar. Use a fork to mash and stir them together until they form a smooth, sandy paste.
  2. Add the spices (1 minute): Sprinkle in 1/4 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, a pinch (about 1/8 teaspoon) of ground nutmeg, and a tiny pinch (about 1/16 teaspoon) of ground allspice. Add 1/4 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Stir everything together with your fork until the spices are completely incorporated.
  3. Transfer to your mug (30 seconds): Scrape the entire butter-sugar-spice mixture into your mug. Use a small rubber spatula or the back of your fork to get every last bit.
  4. Add the rum (30 seconds): Pour 2 ounces (about 1/4 cup or 60ml) of dark or spiced rum into the mug, directly over the butter mixture. Give it a quick stir with a spoon to start dissolving the butter base into the rum.
  5. Pour in the hot water (1 minute): Bring 6 ounces (about 3/4 cup or 180ml) of water to a rolling boil. Pour the hot water into the mug, stirring constantly as you pour. This helps the butter base emulsify into the water, creating that silky, creamy texture.
  6. Stir and taste (1 minute): Stir the drink vigorously for about 20-30 seconds. Taste it. Adjust sweetness, spice, or rum strength to your preference.
  7. Garnish and serve (30 seconds): If using, slide a cinnamon stick into the mug. Optionally, top with a dollop of whipped cream and a light dusting of cinnamon or nutmeg. Serve immediately.

Notes

The butter must be softened to blend properly. Stir continuously when adding hot water to create an emulsion. Use freshly boiled water for best flavor. The butter base can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator for up to 1 week or frozen for up to 3 months. For a non-alcoholic version, omit the rum and use a splash of non-alcoholic spiced rum or 1 teaspoon of rum extract.
