This sweet and salty snack mix combines buttery Chex cereal, crunchy pretzels, and gooey candy corn for the perfect fall treat. It started as a baking accident and became a party favorite that everyone requests year after year.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 9 cups Corn Chex cereal
  • 9 cups Rice Chex cereal
  • 4 cups mini pretzel twists
  • 2 cups candy corn
  • 1 cup salted peanuts (optional)
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 additional cup candy corn (for after baking)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 250°F. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Spread 2 cups of candy corn in a single layer on one prepared baking sheet. Bake for 5 minutes, stir gently, then bake for another 3-5 minutes until soft and slightly melted. Remove and let cool on the pan.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine Corn Chex, Rice Chex, mini pretzels, and peanuts (if using). Toss gently.
  4. In a small saucepan over medium-low heat, melt the butter. Whisk in Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, cayenne (if using), and salt until smooth and fragrant (2-3 minutes). Do not let it boil.
  5. Pour the warm seasoning mixture over the cereal mixture. Fold gently until every piece is coated.
  6. Spread the coated cereal mixture evenly across both prepared baking sheets. Bake for 10 minutes, stir gently, then bake for another 10 minutes.
  7. Remove baking sheets from oven. Scatter the pre-roasted candy corn evenly over the warm cereal mixture and gently press into the mix.
  8. Return to oven and bake for another 5-10 minutes until candy corn is soft and gooey but not burnt.
  9. Let cool completely on baking sheets (about 15 minutes). While still warm but not hot, sprinkle remaining 1 cup of whole candy corn over the top. Let cool completely before breaking into pieces and serving.

Notes

Use an oven thermometer to ensure accurate temperature. Fresh candy corn melts more evenly than older candy corn. Let the mix cool completely before storing to maintain crunchiness. The mix actually gets better after 1-2 days as flavors meld. For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free pretzels and ensure Worcestershire sauce is gluten-free. For a dairy-free version, substitute butter with vegan butter or coconut oil.
