This easy crockpot hot chocolate bar lets you enjoy your own party instead of being chained to the stove. The slow cooker does all the heavy lifting, creating a rich, creamy hot chocolate that guests can customize with a variety of toppings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups half-and-half
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups mini marshmallows
  • 1 cup whipped cream
  • 1/2 cup crushed candy canes
  • 1/2 cup chocolate shavings
  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract
  • 1/4 cup Christmas sprinkles
  • 1 tablespoon sea salt flakes

Instructions

  1. Spray the inside of a 6-quart slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray.
  2. Pour in the whole milk and half-and-half. Whisk gently to combine.
  3. Sift the cocoa powder into the milk mixture to prevent lumps. Add the salt and whisk until smooth.
  4. Pour in the chocolate chips and the entire can of sweetened condensed milk. Do not stir yet.
  5. Cover the slow cooker and cook on LOW for 2 hours. Do not lift the lid during this time.
  6. After 2 hours, remove the lid and whisk everything together until smooth and glossy. If chocolate chips are not fully melted, cover and cook for another 30 minutes.
  7. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  8. While the hot chocolate finishes, arrange toppings in small bowls. Crush candy canes in a ziplock bag. Shave chocolate with a vegetable peeler.
  9. Switch the slow cooker to the WARM setting. If the hot chocolate thickens too much, stir in a splash of milk.
  10. Set out mugs and a ladle, and let everyone build their own hot chocolate.

Notes

For the best results, use full-fat dairy. Low-fat milk will work but won’t be as thick. If you’re dairy-free, swap the milk for oat milk and the half-and-half for coconut cream. The hot chocolate can be made a day ahead and reheated; flavors meld overnight and become even richer.
